Promises! Promises!

Hi Folks, I'm the Reverend Cedric Parsons, (retired! What a laugh!!)

Promises! Promises!

They/We are supposed to be put out to pasture when we retire, but it seems they put us clergy out to pastor!

This past week I lost a friend, not misplaced, I'm not that forgetful yet! But passed away. They are no longer there, there is an empty space where they used to be, a physical space that is, their sick bed is cold and empty, they are still there in my heart, and that aches a little when I look for them or think about them, and it seems strange, unreal, if you have lost a loved one you know what I mean. I don't mean to be sad or morbid, but if they are not here where are they? It's a question I get asked. Well in the case of my friend, I know, because of promises.

One of my favourite passages in the bible is John 14:1-6 (have a read) Jesus is going away, and is going to prepare the way, in His Father's house are many rooms says Jesus, and we know the way, Thomas, don't you just love him, he says things we want to say and ask too, Jesus is talking about heaven, and Jesus goes on to say that the way there is through Him only, "He is the way the truth and the life, and no one goes to the Father (God) except through Him" well my friend knew Jesus as his personal saviour, so his destination is not in doubt, and he knew where he was going too. We/the church celebrated Pentecost on the 20thMay. A promise kept. Not only did Jesus pray for us (John 17) but Jesus promised to send us help, a comforter. Not just for the disciple's then but for us now, promise kept, my absolute favourite passage in scripture is from Romans 8:28 to the end. (Have a read) That say's nothing can separate from the love of God in Christ Jesus. Not even death itself, and we know that Jesus defeated death when he rose from the dead. He promised the thief next to him on a cross that he would be in paradise with him (Jesus) that very day. My friend had been suffering for long time, and to be honest with you I found that hard to bear some days, and so another favourite passage is in Revelations 21:3-5

"And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying,"look! God's dwelling place is now among his people, and he will dwell with them and be their God, he will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying, for the old order of things has passed away." He who was seated on the throne said, "I am making everything new!" then he said. "Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true."

So I don't doubt where my friend is and is no longer suffering nor in pain because of God/Jesus promises. I know I can draw on the strength God gives me, his help and comfort to get through tough times, and I know that nothing in this world nothing! can separate us from His love. Love is eternal and powerful. I hold on to those promises, but you know those promise are not just for those sad and tough times but for all times good and bad, and though I might have lost a friend in this physical world. I know they are in closer presence of a loving and caring God, I have a friend in Jesus, who never breaks a promise. I wonder do you know this too?

Promises! Promises!

PS. I guess my friend has truly retired at last!
